Zen Mother from Seattle headlines this far out night at MAO!

 

​Tou-JAM Presents a night of far-out sounds from all over! Taking inspiration from way back 60's grooves and modern textures too, the night will hold tight for those searching elsewhere for your music selection.

 

The night's headliner will be Zen Mother, a psychedelic three-piece on tour from Seattle, USA, playing their first ever Shanghai show. Their music was described in Seattle Weekly as “dreamlike, spectral, and unrelenting” with their song “Get High Now” harnessing “garage drums, guitar that’s more tremolo than melody, a wicked Summer of Love groove.”

 

They'll be joined in support by solid local acts, including Shanghai folk-psychedelic fusion group Parachutes on Fire. The band is made up of an all-star line-up of some of the city's best bands from the past, including The Horde, Friend or Foe, and The Beat Bandits.

Monika Khot and Wolcott Smith’s Zen Mother formed at the end of 2015 within a windowless warehouse in central Virginia as an homage to post punk band This Heat, and avant-garde composer Igor Wakhévitch. Nearly a month after it's inception they abandoned their warehouse and took the project across America, touring their way to a new home in Seattle, WA. Once landing in Seattle they got to work recording, and in the summer of 2017 they released their debut record “I Was Made To Be Like Her” on Illuminasty Records, which The Wire Magazine says “create[s] searingly memorable moments from lucid poetry, psychedelic textures, and the most effective facets of art-rock, post-industrial, and grunge.”

In the same year the group won the Cue Northwest Music residency which commissioned them to create and perform a live soundtrack for Alejandro Jodorowsky's cult surrealist/existential film The Holy Mountain. They premiered and performed the two hour avant-rock heavyweight at the Northwest Film Forum on August, 25th, 2017 to a sold out crowd and received a standing ovation from the ecstatic ears who witnessed the onetime performance. They have since recorded the material and solicited Randall Dunn (producer of Sunn O))), Earth, & Boris) to mix what has become known as "The Ascent," for a planned release in 2018.
