Chorus THE CHOIR of NEW COLLEGE, OXFORD
THE CHOIR of NEW COLLEGE OXFORD is one of the most acclaimed British ensembles with an international reputation for excellence and innovative performances. One of the finest examples of the British tradition of choirs featuring boy trebles, New College Choir continues to achieve the highest levels of performance while featuring 8–13 year-olds trained to sing as professionals. It can also claim an important place in the UK’s cultural heritage with a history of continuous singing from the time when the college was established in the 14th century. There are very few choirs which can claim a tradition of almost uninterrupted music-making and are still performing at a level of global excellence.
The choir established its current reputation in the 1980s, with collaborations with some of the UK’s finest period instrument ensembles. Since then it has continued to explore unusual and challenging repertoire, particularly the music of the early English Renaissance, J S Bach,and20thand 21st -century work, including a series of commissions from composers of international acclaim, such as James MacMillan, Joanna Marsh, and Nico Muhly.
New College Choir has performed in prestigious venues across the globe, and has always embraced touring as a vital part of its performance practice. Recent highlights have included Rome, Malta, and a highly acclaimed visit to the east coast of the USA. Plans for 2025 include concerts in southern France. Switzerland, Sweden, and the USA in 2026.
Conductor Robert Quinney
Robert Quinney enjoys an international reputation as one of the finest musicians of his generation, combining formidable virtuosic skills as an organist with exceptional qualities as a choir director, informed by his musicologist’s vision. He brings all these skills to his role as director of New College Choir, where he has established a reputation for innovative programming and vibrant sound. He has maintained the choir’s reputation for challenging repertoire and technical assurance, as well as historically informed performances.
Robert Quinney began his musical life as a chorister in Dundee Cathedral Choir, where he first experienced his ambition to be part of the traditions of British choral music at the highest levels. He was subsequently Organ Scholar of King’s College, Cambridge. He studied music at Cambridge, where he completed his undergraduate and graduate studies. A performing career then took him to London, where he worked first at Westminster Cathedral, then for nine years as Sub-Organist at Westminster Abbey, during which time he performed at important national and state occasions – including, in 2011, the Marriage of the Prince and Princess of Wales. After a short period as Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral he moved to Oxford in 2014.
His current role is director of the world-famous Choir of New College, Oxford, where he is Tutorial Fellow in Music; he is also an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Music. He combines his conducting work with the choir with his academic role in the University, and brings the insights of his academic work to the choir’s performances.
