巴洛克时期的作曲家安东尼奥·维瓦尔第与 20 世纪的阿根廷探戈大师阿斯特·皮亚佐拉同样选取了一年中的四季变化为题创作音乐，因此两部作品也经常同时出现在音乐会舞台上，以“八季”为题的音乐会策划在全世界都并不罕见。维瓦尔第的《四季》作于 1725 年，是音乐史上最早的标题音乐之一，四部协奏曲按春、夏、秋、冬的顺序演奏，每首协奏曲都配以维瓦尔第亲自创作的十四行诗，音乐与文字完美呼应。令人拍案叫绝的还有作曲家对自然界事物用音乐进行表达，最具代表性的是《夏》中的蚊虫鸣叫与疾风骤雨。时至今日，《四季》已经成为知名度最高的古典音乐作品之一，其中的许多旋律都令人耳熟能详。

如果说维瓦尔第的《四季》是“自然的四季”，那么皮亚佐拉的《布宜诺斯艾利斯的四季》就是“人的四季”。与维瓦尔第的作品不同，皮亚佐拉的作品以秋季开始，经由冬春，结束于夏。作品以阿根廷的首都为背景，将探戈音乐从酒吧里的民间娱乐提升到了音乐厅的舞台，融合了爵士乐、南美民间音乐与古典音乐，展现了这座城市复杂的文化生活，以及现代人生活其中所感受到的孤独、激情与疏离感。

值得一提的是，本场音乐会上将要演出的这两部《四季》均非原作：上半场皮亚佐拉的作品出自俄罗斯作曲家杰夏特尼科夫之手，他将其改编为小提琴与乐队作品。下半场的维瓦尔第《四季》则是原中国爱乐乐团助理艺术总监，著名指挥家、钢琴家、作曲家石叔诚的手笔，原作中独奏小提琴与通奏低音的功能被双钢琴上的两组四手联弹取代，分别由石玮、石容和周乐娉、周乐婷这两对音乐界少见的钢琴家双胞胎姐妹担任，这无疑将是一次新奇的听觉体验。

The Baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi and the 20th-century Argentine tango master Astor Piazzolla both chose the changing of the seasons as the subject of their music, which is why their works often appear together on concert programs. The concert theme “The Eight Seasons” is not uncommon worldwide. Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, composed in 1725, is one of the earliest examples of program music in history. The four concertos are performed in the order of spring, summer, autumn, and winter, each accompanied by a sonnet written by Vivaldi himself. The music perfectly mirrors the words. What’s particularly remarkable is how Vivaldi expressed natural phenomena through music, with the most famous example being the buzzing of mosquitoes and the storm in Summer. Today, The Four Seasons remains one of the most well-known classical works, with many of its melodies instantly recognizable.

If Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons represents the “seasons of nature,” then Piazzolla’s The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires represents the “seasons of man.” Unlike Vivaldi’s work, Piazzolla’s composition starts with autumn, progresses through winter and spring, and ends with summer. The work is set against the backdrop of Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, elevating tango music from its origins in bars and folk entertainment to the concert hall. Piazzolla fused jazz, South American folk music, and classical elements to portray the city’s complex cultural life, highlighting the loneliness, passion, and alienation felt by modern people living in it.

It’s worth mentioning that the versions of The Four Seasons being performed in this concert are not the original compositions. The version of Piazzolla’s work presented in the first half is adapted for violin and orchestra by the Russian composer Leonid Desyatnikov. And Vivaldi's The Four Seasons featured in the second half was reimagined by Shi Shucheng—former Assistant Artistic Director of the China Philharmonic Orchestra, and a renowned conductor, pianist, and composer. In this adaptation, the roles of the solo violin and continuo in the original work are replaced by two sets of piano four-hands on dual pianos, performed respectively by two rare pairs of twin pianists: Shi Wei & Shi Rong, and Zhou Leping & Zhou Leting. This undoubtedly promises a novel auditory experience.
